The best wholemeal spelt rolls recipe for delicious dark rolls that are quick to make and simply taste great. Not too crispy, but fluffy, soft and very aromatic, these wholemeal rolls taste great not only at breakfast, but also in the evening as a side dish on a plate of bread with oil, butter or herb butter.

Wherever wholemeal flour is used, it is healthier for the body than pure white flour. Even if it is best to avoid carbohydrates from flour products almost completely, I cannot and do not want to do without them completely.

  2. Experiment with flavours: you can add different flavours to the wholemeal spelt rolls to make them even more interesting. The recipe for my dark bread rolls is easy and simple. It is also made from healthy ingredients, but one thing is really important: the flavour. The slightly nutty flavour of the spelt flour gives the bread rolls a very special touch that you won’t find in conventional bread rolls.

Depending on the topping and additional flavourings, you can always vary the bread rolls a little and make them super versatile.

  • Dissolve the yeast in the water, preferably directly in a mixing bowl.
    250 ml water, still
    7 g instant yeast
  • Add the remaining ingredients and knead with the dough hook for approx. 7 minutes. Start 7 minutes timer here
    250 g whole grain spelt flour
    250 g white spelt flour
    5 g fine salt
    35 g olive oil
  • Now let the dough rest in the mixing bowl in a warm and draft-free place for one hour (cover with a fresh kitchen towel). Start 60 minutes timer here
  • Now knead the dough again by hand and divide into 10 equal pieces. Shape these pieces into rolls and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  • Now brush the rolls with water and sprinkle with seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, linseed) if desired. Then leave the rolls to rest again at room temperature for approx. 20 minutes. Start 20 minutes timer here
  • Preheat the oven to240 °C. Before baking, cut the rolls lengthways with a sharp knife and bake in the centre of the oven for approx. 15-20 minutes..Start 15 minutes timer here
  • You can also spray the buns with water while baking to make them rise even more.
